Good Things

You can’t get enough of a Good Thing(s), as they say, and this being the title of Aloe Blacc’s latest album out on Stones Throw couldn’t be more apt! I’ve had this on heavy rotation for the last couple months and it is still hasn’t failed to raise a smile and result in a little toe tap yet. One of my favourite albums this year, CLICK for more info.

Geeked Out

It’s Sunday and I’m feeling particularly geeked out and inspired after On The Buttons yesterday, so I’ve got my sample/production head on. This all started with me feeling for some Minnie Riperton with my morning coffee, the next thing I’m trying to find out who, over the years, sampled ‘Inside my Love’ that I may not already be aware of. Next thing you know I’m writing this post.  This track’s been chopped up and sampled more times than I’ve had hot dinners (that is no way an exaggeration). Not surprising really! Dilla used it on two tracks, including the one below, (that I’m aware of before all you crate digging backpackers jump in to correct me), not to mention Diamond D on the Pharcyde track ‘Groupie Therapy’, Quest’s ‘Lyrics to Go’, Aaliyah ‘Heartbroken’, 2 Pac on ‘Me Against the World’, Intelligent Hoodlum ‘Street Life’ (Return to Life Remix) and Kenny Dope ‘Get on Down’…I could go on and on but, I’ve probably just lost 90% of my readership for over geeking it. Any ways, feel enlightened and enjoy both the original and it’s offspring.

Kashmir Kid

Kashmir Kid and I first met when he and Goldielocks shared a nice little studio tucked away in the West End. We instantly bonded over a love of J Dilla, not to mention most things hip hop, and I’ve always listened to his beats with an appreciative ear, hopeful that he’d get off his backside and start pushing his music. In fact, he’ll tell you I’ve probably nagged him constantly about it every time I’ve seen him since we met 4 or so years ago. His sound’s a fusion of electronic laced with a healthy dose of dubstep and future Garage with hint of eastern influence, and the good news is, he’s now releasing a double A side titled Return To Bombay City / Only Friend on Gut Instinct records.  This will be out digitally on 27th September you can find it on Itunes, Beatport and Juno.

The Queens of Hip Hop

Serious all lady line-up for this Queens of Hip Hop happening courtesy of the The Doctor’s Order at Big Chill House 4th September. I am, naturally, biased as Lucy Pink and myself will be spinning party tunes back-to-back but that fact aside, the stellar line-up of female talent in not to be sniffed at:

DJ Yasmin, DJ Kayper, Yarah Bravo (live), Sahasrara (live) and Lucy Pink & myself (back 2 back)

Big Chill House, 4th September 2010, free before 10pm £5 after

Come show us some love> CLICK

Dead Prez Winner!

First off I have to say I was very impressed by the volume of highly entertaining entries to the Dead Prez competition.  The competition even made it onto the Moneysavingexpert.com forum, which has been a career long ambition of mine, so that’s another box ticked. And now for the winner…this was not an easy task, some of you are incredibly witty and imaginative and some of you are just straight up odd. Without further ado a big, conscious Hip-Hop head nod goes to early years teacher Marek Chojnacki who pulled at my heart with his tales of teaching the un-toilet trained youth.  I’m not sure if your tale of woe is true Marek but I’d like to say if it isn’t, you’ve got an over active imagination and should probably be on some sort of medication. The two tickets are yours so enjoy!

JAZ – Fire in Booth!

I dunno what to say other than this: There are but an handful of female emcess in this hip hop game I actually rate and Jaz, the lady above, is one of them. She has skills and balls in equal measure and she’s got no qualms about bringing the realness. She stepped out the booth for a minute but it gives me great pleasure to say she’s back! Show your support and spread this video far and wide, the more views she gets, the more chance she’ll get to perform on Charlie Sloth’s 1Xtra Radio show and the more chance we’ll all have of being saved from the bubble gum crap circulating at the moment.  Talk with your fingers people and support real talent, don’t make me get rowdy about this!
